The "Why This College" essay is where many applications fall apart. Admissions officers can spot a generic answer instantly. If you could swap in another school’s name and the essay still makes sense, you have failed the assignment.
Do research that goes deeper than the website
Every applicant mentions the beautiful campus, the strong programs, and the research opportunities. Instead, find:
- A specific professor whose work connects to your interests
- A class that is listed only for that department
- A student organization that solves a problem you care about
- A tradition, lab, or initiative that is genuinely unique to the school
Quote or reference these findings directly in your essay.
Connect the school to your future goals
Do not just praise the school. Explain what you will do with the opportunities you find there. Show a concrete path: this class, this lab, this club, and how they build toward the career or impact you want.
Keep it tight
These essays are usually 150–300 words. Every sentence must earn its place. Cut background about yourself that the rest of your application already covers.
Avoid these traps
- Copying and pasting across schools with minor name swaps
- Focusing only on reputation or rankings
- Writing about location without connecting it to academics or culture
- Talking about the school as a trophy instead of a tool
