Campus visits are one of the best ways to evaluate fit, but without a plan, they blur together. This guide helps you prepare, take better notes, and make confident comparisons.
Before your visit
- Register for the official information session and tour
- Schedule a class visit or interview if available
- Research the school’s top programs, clubs, and recent news
- Prepare 3–5 specific questions you cannot answer from the website
- Read recent student reviews for honest perspectives
During your visit
- Take photos of key locations (dorms, dining halls, library, student center)
- Sit in on a class and observe student engagement
- Talk to current students outside the official tour
- Ask about advising, mental health resources, and career services
- Eat a meal on campus to test the food and atmosphere
- Note the vibe: Do students seem happy? Stressed? Collaborative?
After your visit
- Fill out a standardized comparison sheet while memory is fresh
- Rate categories like academics, social life, location, and cost
- Discuss impressions with family or mentors
- Update your college list rankings if needed
How to compare visits
After three or four tours, campuses start to blend together. A structured comparison template prevents that. Rate each school on academics, culture, location, cost, and career support. Look for patterns in your ratings rather than obsessing over single scores.
