There is no shortage of tools promising to simplify college planning. Some are free. Some are expensive. Some look beautiful but lack substance. We tested the most popular options so you can pick the right stack for your workflow.
Spreadsheets
Google Sheets and Excel remain the go-to for many students. They are flexible, free, and work offline. The downside is that you have to build everything yourself. If you enjoy customizing layouts, spreadsheets are unbeatable. If you want structure out of the box, they require upfront effort.
Notion & Airtable
Notion templates and Airtable bases offer more visual organization than spreadsheets. You can embed links, add images, and create relational databases. The learning curve is steeper, and free plans have limits. Still, they are excellent if you are already using them for school notes.
College Board & Naviance
These institutional platforms provide school-specific data, scattergrams, and basic planning features. They are useful for researching acceptance rates and seeing how you stack up against past applicants. They are not designed for daily task management.
Path2Admission
Path2Admission combines the flexibility of a spreadsheet with the intelligence of an app. It auto-tracks deadlines, categorizes schools by reach/target/safety, and sends reminders so nothing falls through the cracks. Built specifically for the admissions process, it cuts out the manual work that makes generic tools frustrating.
Our recommendation
Start with a free spreadsheet or toolkit to learn the ropes. Once you understand the workflow, upgrading to a dedicated app like Path2Admission saves hours of manual updates and reduces stress during crunch time.
