August College Application Checklist: What Rising Seniors Should Do Right Now

August is the calm before the storm. If you are a rising senior, the next four months will determine where you spend the next four years. Use this checklist to start strong so you are not scrambling in October.

Week 1: Finalize Your College List

Your list should be 8–12 schools with a healthy mix of reach, target, and safety. If you have not settled on it yet, now is the time.

• Confirm each school's application deadline (EA, ED, RD, Rolling)
• Check if your target schools require supplemental essays
• Verify testing requirements — many schools are still test-optional
• Make sure you have at least two safety schools you would genuinely attend

Week 2: Draft Your Personal Statement

The Common App essay is the one piece of writing every school sees. Do not leave it until October.

• Brainstorm 3–5 story ideas that reveal something about your character
• Pick one and write a full first draft — it does not have to be perfect
• Read it out loud to catch awkward phrasing
• Ask a trusted teacher or mentor for feedback

Week 3: Request Recommendations

Teachers are busiest in September and October. Ask now while they have time.

• Choose two teachers who know you well (not just the ones who gave you an A)
• Ask in person or via email with a clear deadline
• Provide each teacher with a brag sheet: your resume, interests, and the schools you are applying to
• Waive your right to view the letter — colleges take it more seriously

Week 4: Organize Your Deadlines

By the end of August, you should know every deadline between now and January.

• Create a master calendar with all application dates, test dates, and financial aid deadlines
• Note which schools have early deadlines (October 15 and November 1 come fast)
• Set internal deadlines two weeks before each official deadline
• If you are applying Early Decision, confirm your parents understand the binding commitment

August sets the tone for your entire senior fall. If you walk into September with a finalized list, a personal statement draft, recommendation requests sent, and a deadline calendar, you are ahead of 80% of applicants. The rest of the fall becomes about polishing, not panicking.
