How Many Colleges Should You Apply To?

There is no universal right number, but there is a universal wrong one: so many that your applications are thin, or so few that you have no safety net. The goal is a list that gives you choices without burning you out.

The standard range: 8 to 12

Most students apply to 8 to 12 schools. Below 8, and you risk having no affordable or desirable option if results disappoint. Above 12, and the quality of each individual application usually suffers.

Adjust based on your profile

  • Strong, narrow fit: 6 to 8 if your stats are stellar and your list is realistic.
  • Mixed or borderline stats: 10 to 12 to cover more range.
  • Scholarship hunting: Add 2 to 3 rolling or safety schools with automatic merit aid.
  • Art or athletic recruiting: Your number may be higher or lower depending on coach interest.

The cost factor

Application fees add up fast. Expect $50 to $90 per school. Fee waivers are available for qualifying students, but they require paperwork. Factor this into your number.

The time factor

Each selective school means more supplemental essays, more research, more recommendation coordination, and more cost. Time spent on a twentieth choice is time stolen from your first.

Quality beats quantity

Admissions officers can tell when an application was rushed. A polished, thoughtful application to 8 schools beats a mediocre 15-school spray-and-pray every time.

Balance your list

No matter how many schools you choose, maintain the reach, target, and safety ratio. If you are not sure whether your list is balanced, audit it with our free Reach/Target/Safety School Tracker.
