College Interviews: How to Prepare and What to Ask

Not every school offers interviews, but when they do, they matter. A strong interview can tip a borderline applicant into the admit pile. A weak one can confirm doubts that the rest of your application raised.

Research before you practice

Know the school’s mission, recent initiatives, and what makes it distinct from its peers. Read student newspapers or club websites for a less polished view of campus life. This background lets you answer questions with specificity.

Prepare stories, not scripts

Memorized answers sound robotic. Instead, prepare three to four stories from your life that illustrate growth, curiosity, collaboration, or resilience. Adapt the story to the question in the room.

Common questions and strong angles

  • Tell me about yourself: Focus on one or two threads, not your entire resume.
  • Why this school: Mention a specific program, professor, or tradition.
  • What is your greatest weakness? Be honest, then describe what you are doing to improve.
  • What do you want to study? Show passion and intellectual curiosity, not just career pragmatism.

What you should ask them

Ask questions that show you have thought deeply:

  • What do students here wish they had known before arriving?
  • How accessible are professors outside class?
  • Can you describe a recent change on campus students are talking about?

Practice out loud

Do a mock interview with a teacher, counselor, or parent. Record yourself. You will notice verbal tics, filler words, and pacing issues you miss in your head.
